daily mail fail
Well it seems like The Daily Mail has touched a nerve with an article today by one of its columnists Jan Moir. Her article about the death of Stephen Gately seems to have caused outrage. Best to read it yourself to get the jist of why it is so controversial. This outrage has particularly come from new media such as Twitter.
Famous users of Twitter, such as Stephen Fry have denounced her homophobic statements. The brilliant Charlie Brooker has then provided a breakdown and analysis of this on the Guardian website. Excellently written, he proves this to be an absolutely awful article by the columnist in question, and full of apparent homophobic undertones.
It also seems as though that the Press Complaints Commission has been over-run by complaints too.
The views of homophobia alluded to by this columnist are awful. The Daily Mail has seemingly hit a nerve with me for a while with its views which I tend not to agree with. The article in question is just sickening, particularly considering its publishing date. The guy has only been dead for five days and his funeral is tomorrow. If this piece was to be released at all, today was definitely not the day to do it.
We have also seen the way that the social networking world works. A lot of condemnation of this column. Stephen Fry has said that
Ms Moir Speaks out:“In what is clearly a heavily orchestrated internet campaign
But really can she say this? How can it be heavily orchestrated. It is pure disgust at some outdated, wrong views. The Daily Mail may claim to be bastion of good society and almost the savior from a “Britain that has gone to the dogs”, but to by today’s events, it appears to be an outdated, backwards, homophobic publication. The sub-editor/editor who allowed this to published should be ashamed of themselves.
