don’t change for the planet just because it’s changing…

Today there has been debate about climate change, principally because there has been the leaking of emails which have shown figures have been doctored by some scientists to give greater weighting towards the climate change argument. Look here for more information if you are not up-to-speed with what has happened.

With the Copenhagen summit on the horizon, climate change and the environment is hot news, as it has been for several years. There is a great deal of evidence in its favour, but there are also those who disagree, claiming it to be a big conspiracy.

I am not going to go into the debates for or against or state my opinions on which side I agree with here in this post, I want to make a point about the world and the environment which I think transcends this.

Regardless of whether we face a ‘climate catastrophe’ or not, whether the polar ice-cap will melt or not, whether the global temperature changes are caused by man or not, I feel there is something missed in all these arguments. Why can we not just change because we know what we do is damaging the planet in other ways. Here are the facts. Eventually we will run out of coal, oil, gas, FACT. So why not try NOW and invest in renewables? Why not try and stop choking up our cities and causing deforestation by re-cycling, by intelligent planning and sustainable agriculture? We know the resources are finite, lets invest in technologies which will reduce our demand on carbon fuels.

It strikes me as awful that we know we are causing death and destruction, yet people will not budge and do something about it. They will not do anything because they are sceptics about global warming. Regardless, after the progress the human race has made, can we not acknowledge that many of our actions cause irreparable damage to the environment in other ways that global warming. Animals die, ecosystems are wiped out.

It’s time for action: Copenhagen better work.

Make a pledge for 2010 – 10:10. Reduce your carbon emissions by 10% during that year, and keep them going down. http://www.1010uk.org/

  1. Bing. I agree Aide. Even without human-induced climate change you still have a billion people starving and 3 billion more living on a dollar a day or less; you still have peak oil coming in the next decade or two; you still have worldwide water scarcity; you still have the abuse, pollution and destruction of the environment.

Ladies and gentlemen, you don’t need an excuse to stop being shit to the world; just do it!
